Julia asked Mako to reflect on his recent trip to Japan, where he sourced materials and deepened relationships with artisans in the Nihonga ecosystem—paper makers, brush makers, silk makers, and pigment shop owners who have known him for nearly 40 years. 1 These visits reinforced the generational, relational nature of his practice and inspired conversations about hospitality, beauty, and justice that connect to his updated Culture Care edition (releasing July from IVPress) and his recent book with Haejiin, Beauty and Justice (Brazos Press).
